Yesterday, in part one of my exclusive conversation (link fixed) with the Speaker of the House, I wrote a fairly lengthy summary/blog post to go with it. Not today... listeners need to hear these words for themselves.

In particular, near the end of this short segment I ask, "Why will a government shutdown make your job harder?"

I think the whole conversation is worth hearing, but conservatives will find that answer particularly illuminating:

In other words: those of you who are hoping House Republicans will push Democrats on spending cuts to the point they risk a government are out of luck.

Maybe Speaker Boehner has recently answered that question so specifically but if so, I haven't heard it.

I'm almost hesitant to post it, in fact. Personally, I don't agree with the Speaker in this instance and put myself squarely in the Erick Erickson school of thought on the subject of driving spending cuts. But at the very least, I certainly can't see the wisdom of telling Democrats so explicitly that you have no stomach for such a showdown... seems like a recipe for ultimately witnessing a spending cut airball, if you ask me.

Look, I'm extremely appreciative of Red County's opportunity to interview the Speaker of the House like we had yesterday. Further, I've had just enough limited interaction with him to conclude sincerely that John Boehner is a good and decent man, so I'm going to bite my lip on further comment and file this one away for now under the category of 'I hope he knows what he's doing.'

Most fiscal conservatives, however, likely won't be so kind upon hearing these words.

Uninspiring

With all respect to Representative Boehner (the man), his current approach is misguided. Where is the bold leadership? Our country is in trouble and we desperately need those who will talk about AND apply fiscal responsibility. Some may like the honesty of the good Representative saying he does not want to shut down the government. More of us are likely aghast at handing the opposition a big hammer to use on us during budget negotiations. Why do I get the idea Representative Boehner likes conservatives kind of like a framed picture ... looks nice but not very practical? Apparently the message of last November was not loud enough. This is not about my party against your party ... this about doing the right thing for the long-term good of our blessed country.

Which shutdown do you prefer Congressman Boehner

The CBO has recently stated that the current level of spending is unsustainable.

A Federal Reserve official (Dallas, TX) has stated that America is on the brink of insolvency.

Since the Democratic spending onslaught - the annual budget for the Federal Govt has almost doubled (from 2 trillion to 3.73 trillion (with an alledged understatement of 2.3 trillion)) and yet the Republicans have difficulty finding support for  less than 2% of the now doubled budget.

So which is it Congressman Boehner -

1) Shutdown if necessary to avoid shutdown by insolvency?

or

2) Shutdown by insolvency

Which shutdown do you prefer?

What are you going to tell

What are you going to tell the country when these budget cuts costs more jobs. Go after medicare fraud...go after programs where you can get the country behind you. If we lose more jobs because of these cuts, the party is done.

No one even remembers the last shutdown

The idea that the republicans "lost" the last shutdown is a myth. Everyone won and the country was better off for it. The only people that didn't like it were some federal employees that had probably already made up their minds on the two parties anyway.

Bold Boehner or Bailing Boehner

I agree, except for military & public safety, shut 'er down! That way we can start anew & figure out just exactly we need & what's pork, which is really modified Jackson's spoils system!

Real ideas for budget cuts

I would love to see our country become what it once was, With this thought in mind a place I feel we should consider cutting in our budget is from both our congress and our senate. My husband was Military as are many of my friends and family I feel that they served our country equally as mush as a Congressman or Senator. So please tell me why it is their retirement is serve 20 years or more then get your pension. Why can't our Senators be required to serve in office of either Congress or senate for 20 years before they earn a pension. That would cut costs and why should they get free medical at the best places with no money out of pocket. They want to be in office to make a difference so lets start by cutting their pay to ensure people who are there aren't doing it for the perks but for the respect that it deserves. If they were required to have a balanced budget like all americans are expected to then this Country could be so much better. It is illegal for any of us to write a check with no money so how come if they do it we don't cut their pay to cover the bounces or their overdraft fees . I know this is not an idea many will think is very helpful but it really irks me to see our troops give everything and after getting out if they make very much money on the outside they no longer qualify for their VA bennifits. My husband is one of those and I am fine with us having to pay for Medical out of our pocket but I feel after serving this country and that being something he was promised and it has been taken away then maybe our Senators and Congress should pay for theirs as well and they can actually afford it much better than most of us.
