The mayor of Smyrna was presented with a Mexican flag at the end of the City Council meeting on Monday. No it wasn't a show of appreciation for his efforts in working with the Hispanic community, quite the opposite.
Cobb County is one of the few counties in Georgia who have undergone training from ICE which allows them to question the citizenship status of any person they detain. Yes, you have to have special training sanctioned by a federal government agency in order to do such a thing. As a result of the program, which has been in place a little over a year, the county has detained and deported almost 2000 illegal aliens. Smyrna is a city within Cobb County and since only the sheriff's department is certified it leaves the cities on their own to handle the problem.
The program has been so effective in Cobb County that the illegal immigrant problem has moved to our northern neighbors in Gwinnett county, who are currently undergoing the training so that they too can deal with the problem.
Stories like this continue to give me hope for the country. In ways big and small average Americans are standing up, and to borrow that infamous line from the movie "Network" proclaiming they are mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore.
The next round of tea parties is scheduled for April 15 and the latest on the one in the Atlanta area is that it will kick off at 6:30 PM at the Capitol allowing those who work for a living and actually pay their taxes to participate. This always subject to change so for those interested make sure to join the Facebook group for the Atlanta Taxpayer Protest.
A bewildered Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon was presented with a small Mexican flag at the end of Monday night's City Council meeting.
Smyrna resident Mary Kirkendoff presented the flag to Bacon, which he refused, during the public comment section of the meeting.
Kirkendoff believes Bacon and the city are too lenient when dealing with illegal immigrants.
"Illegals find safety and sanctuary in this part of Cobb County," she said.
