Cobb County Honors Their Heroes

Heroes exist everywhere. The most apt definition I have seen has been to describe heroes as simply ordinary people during extraordinary things. That seems to be the best way to describe a hero. Most don't seek it, rather they have it thrust upon them. Heroism is often times just as much an act of moral courage as it is physical courage.

Recently Cobb County recognized some in our midst, both in and out of uniform, who performed amazing acts. It is especially important to recognize people like this rather then all of the hero worship we do for athletes and entertainers.

This was especially timely here since the other day a trio of police officers risked their lives to pull a driver out of a burning vehicle, saving his life.

Among the honorees this time were three citizens - Anthony Alvarez, Carlos Hicks and Daniel Stringfellow - were honored for their role in disarming a suspect who murdered his girlfriend with a sword inside a Moe's restaurant in 2003.

For a good inspirational story or something to use to point out what real heroes are this can't be beat. None of these people got their 15 minutes of fame on all of the talking head or morning talk shows. They just did what needed to be done and were the right person at the right time. In a day an age when bad behavior is bound to land you a book and movie deal and extend your 15 minutes into 15 days of notoriety it is good to cast a light on people who do the right thing.
