A Case For Preemption?

By Christian Milord | 05/31/09

We've seen this old movie time and time again. Iran and N. Korea initiate controversies by taking hostages, or testing more advanced weapons. These rogue states rattle sabers at key moments when media attention is elsewhere, thus bringing the spotlight back to center stage. The mullahs and Kim Jong-Il play this chess game to perfection in order to analyze the reaction to their provocative acts. Both... read more »

Their Sacrifice Preserves Liberty

By Christian Milord | 05/25/09

Just as Veteran's Day has an interesting history, so too does Memorial Day.  A number of solemn poems precisely express the emotions of battle and the sacrifices of our valiant warriors.  Theodore O'Hara's "Bivouac of the Dead" (1847) was written during the war with Mexico.  O'Hara poignantly captured the scene of the Battle of Buena Vista after witnessing the fighting and sobering casualties.  He... read more »

The Real Palestinians

By Christian Milord | 05/25/09

In a recent White House meeting, Pres. Obama urged Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to work toward a two-state solution (Israel and Palestine) that could usher in greater prosperity and security in the region. Obama will meet with other regional players over the next few weeks. I don't think an experienced Netanyahu needs to be told by a rookie how to manage Israel's internal security, and external relations with the Arab... read more »

Cool and Hip? Not So Much....

By Christian Milord | 05/23/09

In a recent speech in Georgia, RNC Chairman Michael Steele said this about Pres. Obama, "He's young.  He's cool.  He's hip...he's got all the qualities America likes in a celebrity, so of course he's going to be popular."  Steele then went on to encourage folks to criticize Obama on policy issues, and noted that governing is a serious business.  Popularity should have little to do with how... read more »

What A Disappointment

By Christian Milord | 05/20/09

What a disappointment Arnold Schwarzenegger has been over the past five and a half years!  Now he's a lame duck who might end up just as fiscally unsound, if not more so, than Gray Davis.  One wonders if he can do much to redeem his tattered legacy as an almost two-term governor. When the governator was elected in the Fall of 2003, he entered the scene with fanfare, name recognition, and... read more »

Questions For Liberals

By Christian Milord | 05/18/09

As we observe and reflect on the critical challenges that face us at home and abroad, it might be relevant to ask liberals some questions regarding their voting decisions last November.  Here goes: Do you believe in the virtues of hard work, paying fair taxes, and trying one's best to be a law abiding person?  Do you think that folks ought to enjoy the fruits of their labors without excessive regulations and future... read more »

Obama Still Campaigning

By Christian Milord | 05/17/09

You have to hand it to Barack Obama for his crafty skills as a snake oil salesman.  He entered the lion's den to deliver the Commencement Address to Notre Dame faculty and graduates at South Bend, Indiana.  One of my Chicago cousins graduated from this fine university about three decades ago.  Just prior to entering the USCG, I also attended two Fighting Irish football games in 1978 when Joe... read more »

Gore And Pelosi: Birds of a Feather

By Christian Milord | 05/16/09

Do you ever wonder if Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi might be two sides of the same coin?  Both of these loose cannons relish any chance to blame Republicans for their own personal behavior and choices. BothBoth are thin skinned, and can't disguise their ambition and striving after absolute power. Both talk a good game about caring for people, but they confuse care with control over others. Moreover,... read more »

Fairness Doctrine: Because Nobody Wants to Listen

By Christian Milord | 05/15/09

Some of the liberal Democrats are at it again with their convoluted notions of what constitutes fairness in the airwaves and marketplace of ideas. The usual suspects (Biden, Durbin, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, etc.) want to resurrect the Fairness Doctrine so that liberals have a total monopoly over the media. Since liberals can't compete in the sphere of news commentary, these busybodies have to find ways to make the lives of... read more »

Gitmo Myths

By Christian Milord | 05/10/09

Myth One.  Vacating Gitmo in less than eight months will mollify the left and the Muslim world, and restore America's moral standing.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Why?  Because the left, fascist states, and terrorists are never satisfied, and they scoff at weakness.  Moreover, history proves that making nice to dictators and terrorists only makes them come after you harder.  By contrast,... read more »
