Lt. Gen. Sanchez at CSUF
By Christian Milord | 11/06/09
I found this bit of news in the Local section of the OCR yesterday. On Saturday, Nov. 7th, at 10:00 a.m., Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez (retired) will be speaking at the Student Union building at CSUF. He will make the keynote speech at the event to honor veterans that have served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Following the speeches, the General will be available to sign his book starting at noon. Ten Problems With Obamacare
By Christian Milord | 10/30/09
As the Baucus/Pelosi/Reid bill works its way through the Senate, there are at least ten major problems with the gargantuan health care plan. First, the "reform" is being pushed during a prolonged recession, when productivity and revenues are down, while deficits and unemployment are high. Now isn't the time to dismantle one of the best medical systems in the world. Now is the time for federal fiscal discipline that can... read more »

Boxer and Feinstein
By Christian Milord | 10/18/09
Although I disagree with most of the domestic and foreign policy views of Dianne Feinstein, she does have a couple of positives over a far left arrogant Barbara Boxer. Boxer has accomplished little during many years in the Senate, and she doesn't respond to well written e-mails and letters. Let's hope that a conservative can replace her in 2010. By contrast, Dianne Feinstein has been a mayor and Senator. ... read more »

Canine Support Team Benefit
By Christian Milord | 10/07/09
I saw this piece recently in the Life/Pets Section of the OCR, and it looks like a worthy cause. A non-profit group called Canine Support Teams is sponsoring a golf event in Temecula on Friday. The benefit will provide wounded veterans with assistance from service dogs. The "Pawz for Wounded Veterans" starts at 7:30 a.m. for anyone interested in supporting injured military veterans from current and prior... read more »

Keep An Eye On CNCS
By Christian Milord | 10/04/09
With much of the news focused on the corruption at ACORN, folks are forgetting about the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which runs AmeriCorps. Folks that are concerned as to how their tax dollars are spent ought to remain vigilant about an organization that tends to resist internal investigations by Congress and the media. For more on the CNCS story, check out Robert S. McCain's report in... read more »

Don't Blame It On Rio
By Christian Milord | 10/04/09
Disappointed Chicagoans might want to point the finger at Rio de Janeiro for securing the 2016 Olympics. It's a waste of time to blame Rio, or even the IOC, or USOC. Hosting an Olympiad is an honor, but also a challenging responsibility, and apparently Rio put on a persuasive presentation. Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo also had some positive factors going for them, but the fatigue factor and politics of the... read more »

Afghanistan Surge Vs. Iraqi Surge
By Christian Milord | 09/23/09
At first glance, it's puzzling that the Afghan campaign is bogged down, in light of the fact that Operation Enduring Freedom was launched 18 months prior to Operation Iraqi Freedom. In a few short months following 9/11/01, al-Qaeda was virtually routed and the Taliban had been ousted. So why is Iraq much further along in its development? Deeper scrutiny reveals reasons why the Iraqi surge was effective in setting the stage for... read more »
Greenhut Moving On
By Christian Milord | 09/20/09
In today's Commentary section of the OCR, Steven Greenhut announced that he will depart soon for Sacramento to work on political news and investigative reporting. He's going to work for a think tank called the Pacific Research Institute. Greenhut will continue to write shorter columns for the OCR, and will focus on state issues. I bet that Chip, David, and Matt might miss him!!! I... read more »
