New Teachers Need Support !

How do school board members put kids first and avoid firing teachers, with school districts facing budget reductions?

Traditionally, school administrators and union leaders favor cuts that target the newest teachers for firing and correspondingly reduce the class offerings for our kids. Senior administrators and union shop stewards who participate in the "negotiations" do not favor across the board payroll cuts that would avoid layoffs, as this action would affect their personal retirement calculations.

The mantra is to keep cuts from the classroom but the traditional method immediately cuts the number or size of the class offerings for the kids.

For example, if a district is anticipating firing 60 new teachers who teach an average of 5 class periods a day, resulting in 54000 lost teaching hours in a year. Hardly, keeping cuts from the classroom!

However, if the administration and the union officials agree to, say, a 4% across the board salary decrease, then all class offerings would be kept and avoid any teacher firings. A concession could be to grant a year or two of service credit to those currently facing retirement for a limited time.

Jerry Brown, Prop. 8 & 2010 Election

Jerry Brown, a man I have met and conversed with several times, is a very bright guy but his actions toward Proposition 8 show a side of his being which is quite unflattering. For crass political gain, he revised the ballot language to make the measure seem something other than what it was--a simple and reasonable definition of the word "marriage" and now he has announced that contrary to his original statements, he will argue for the reversal of Prop 8 when the matter comes before the State Supreme Court early next year. A very stupid position for a very smart guy. His lust for a return engagement as Governor must have addled his brain. It is unreasonable to allow a small percentage of the electorate to hold such sway over an elected official. Democrats and the "media" constantly criticise the Republican Party and its candidates for stressing social issues. Well, at least our social issues have the backing of the majority of Californian's.

This WSJ op/ed is one of the nicest reality check commentaries I have seen on the panic over this recession.

It would be irresponsible in the extreme for an individual to
forestall a personal recession by taking out newer, bigger loans when
the old loans can't be repaid. However, this is precisely what we are
planning on a national level.

I believe these ideas hold sway largely because they promise happy,
pain-free solutions. They are the economic equivalent of miracle
weight-loss programs that require no dieting or exercise. The theories
permit economists to claim mystic wisdom, governments to pretend that
they have the power to dispel hardship with the whir of a printing
press, and voters to believe that they can have recovery without
sacrifice.

My main contention is that his social-democratic impetus sometimes trumps people's interests, notably poor people's interests. The tension surfaces in what Krugman has written about immigration and the threat it is poses to the US welfare state. But the tension is found in his writings on several topics, and, importantly, in omissions in his writings. Krugman has almost never come out against extant government interventions, even ones that expert economists seem to agree are bad, and especially so for the poor.
