Why “Cantor Watch?” Because the young Virginian is supposed to be the future of our party…

I think the good congressman is onto something here (we promised to point out the good with the bad). Today is a good day, based on Congressman Cantor's op/ed in the Washington Times today.

The piece focuses on the fact that small businesses drive job creation in the United States. Congressman Cantor lays out the Republican "alternative strategy" for small business. The short summary is small businesses need tax relief. He summarizes the problems facing small business as follows:

The best medicine for small business is confidence. Unfortunately, those in control of the agenda prescribe anti-competitive union card-check legislation and a budget that raises taxes on the employers of 25 percent of American jobs. In fact, small businesses make up more than 50 percent of the so-called "individuals" to get hit by a $1 trillion tidal wave of tax increases over the next decade.

This piece shows that he "gets it" on this particular topic. Now, let see what he does with it. It is good to see him stand up for small business in the conservative Washington Post, but he now needs to act on the principles he wrote of. Lip service is not enough to save the American economy; we realize our party rests in a deep minority but let's hope he has a plan for using a stance like this for winning the hearts and minds of crossover voters, not just Republicans.

The growing fissure between Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the more conservative Democrats in their caucuses would seem like exceptional targets for possible support of a business-friendly idea like Cantor's here. Hopefully, he can do a little "Whipping" across party lines when the opportunity presents itself.
