There should be no more talk about President Obama being a wimp or lacking in testicular virility. Forget all that criticism about his being weak in dealing with rogue regimes in Pyongyang or Teheran. As no less a conservative authority than Charles Krauthammer has advised, “Pay no attention to what Obama says; watch what he does.” And last Tuesday, when everything was on the line, the president reacted decisively.

On Tuesday, President Obama was being interviewed at the White House by John Harwood of CNBC, when a fly intruded on the president’s personal space and refused to leave after being repeatedly shooed away by the president. Finally, the fly, not realizing that it was pushing its luck, landed on the president’s left hand. With reckless disregard for the consequences, the president swatted the fly with his right hand and killed it. The camera zoomed in on the corpse to display the incontrovertible evidence of the president’s swift and bold action, taken without consultation with any of our allies, other world powers, the UN, or even his closest advisers. Video clips of the incident immediately became available all over the internet.

The response to the president’s action was immediate. Bruce Friedrich, a spokesman for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said, “We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals. We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.”

When asked about the incident, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called the president’s bold action an “act of political courage.” He noted that statistical evidence compiled from the 2008 presidential election showed that PETA members voted for President Obama by a margin of 92% to 8%. Thus, the president risked alienating one of his most dedicated and hard-core support groups. Friedrich expressed PETA’s disappointment with the president’s action, saying, “Swatting a fly on TV indicates he’s not perfect and we’re happy to say that we wish he hadn’t.” Friedrich had no reported comment on the possibility that the president, from PETA’s point of view, may have engaged in hate speech during the incident, when he called the fly a “sucker.”   No one in the White House Press Corps disputed Gibbs’ characterization of the president’s actions. Rush Limbaugh, normally a fierce critic of the president, stated his hope that the president’s forceful action in dealing with a nuisance was a harbinger of things to come, and said that this was one incident where he was happy about the president’s success. He commented that he hadn’t seen anything like President Obama’s forcefulness since President Carter’s vigorous response to the killer rabbit that had attacked his canoe.
