Anaheim Newbies

Greetings to my Republican brethren. For those I have not yet met, my name is Cynthia Ward, and I’d like to thank Matt for inviting me to post as Colony Rabble, reporting on Anaheim politics. I was born and raised in West Anaheim, where I purchased my first home as an adult. My family and I moved to the Anaheim Colony Historic District about a decade ago, where we are in mid-restoration on our second historic home. It was our investment in an aging neighborhood that fired my interest in the way City Hall works, why the system is often broken, and how we go about choosing those we trust to run it all. I hope to bring you a more grass roots perspective on Anaheim’s big city political views. I am not, nor do I ever intend to be, a political consultant, insider, or candidate. I am just a local girl who cares enough about her neck of the woods to get pretty passionate about those who want to run things. That said, let’s take a look at some folks who would like to govern our Home by the River in this next election. I will cover candidates one by one as they come up, feel free to forward any information on your favorites, and not-so-favorites.
It looks like Tom Tait is not the only Anaheim candidate to get a jump-start on the 2010 campaign. Anaheim Hills resident, and political newcomer, Peter Bos is kicking off his run for Anaheim City Council this Friday, at the home of Jim and Sarah Buckles.

It takes nerves of steel to run for office in a city the size of Anaheim as a political unknown, so I will offer a “doff o’ the proverbial” to Mr. Bos for putting himself out there. I have met him a few times, and he has attended a Colony potluck to see what our concerns are in Central Anaheim. While I am not in a position to endorse anyone right now (nor have I been asked), the leadership of the East Anaheim Neighborhood Council sure seems to like him. Pete Bos is one of those people who make instant friends in a crowd, he shakes hands, kisses babies, and in short, he’s good at being a candidate. I would like to hear more specifics about how he intends to be a leader. Sadly, I cannot make it to the Kick Off event, due to a conflict, but I would be interested in a recap from anyone else attending.
I think the 2010 elections are going to be greatly influenced by the blog-o-sphere, and I am honored to be here. Together we share what we know, hear from others, and hopefully generate more informed opinions together. Share with me.

You've hit the big-time, Colony: congrats!
We have come a long way from Gigante, Gustavo. Thanks.
Most of the republicans here tend to be lacking in logic and exploding with ideology, so the addition of Colony Rabble here will make my daily crawl here that much more bearable. We don't agree on everything but Cynthia is as sharp as they come, and has opinions that others ignore at their peril. Actually Jubal... now that I think about it, you should just give her the keys to the site right now. Gah! Also won't be able to make it to the Pete Bos reception, don't think I've met him, but looking forward to hearing about him.
Welcome Cynthia. I love your first sentence how you say "Greetings to my Republican brethren". You are a Tom Daly supporter, correct? Just wondering how soon your first post will be praising Tom Daly as a Democrat that Republicans can support.
How about right now? I love Tom Daly to bits, and the fact that the nimrods at FFFF (how many F's?) bag on him just makes me fight harder for him. Nothing can make me mad faster than ignorant rants, and that e-rag is full of it. Go Tom! Fundraiser at my house this spring.(after a few more projects get finished on the Money Pit so we don't embarress him with open walls)
...how quickly the insurgents turn into enforcers?
I think we need to look beyond political parties and look at what the person will do for Anaheim. To for or against someone just because they do not belong to the same political party that you belong it is being shortsighted. Tom Daly is 100% for Anaheim and knows what needs to be done in Anaheim. I would like to thank Matt for letting Cynthia Blog on Red County despite the Suncal debacle that created so much controversy in Anaheim.
Tom daly is a good man, I do not care what his party is, and while he is all Anaheim, he will do a great job for the entire County, being fair to all the people he represents. The Anaheim carpetbaggers running against him have proven themselves to be total sell outs.
...thanks for accepting my invite. A couple of years ago we were at loggerheads over the SunCal project, and now we're Blogpen mates!
You're a great addition, and it's good to different perspectives from our blogpen, within a larger right-of-center context.
For example, we have Allen the Paulista here...
Thanks Matt, Keep in mind we are likely to draw blood again someday, seeing as how your Lorri wants the Supe seat, and I will go down screaming over it. It takes a big man to invite another veiwpoint. I appreciate it.
At least I never shill for Democrats. I never have and never will. Our party is a big tent party. However I have a big problem with A Republican/conservative blog site and their contributors openly supporting pension spiking Democrats like Daly. Just my opinion and this is not my blog.
You supported pension-spiking Chris Norby for Assembly, Allan. Careful in that glass-house.
Following on this Matt, I'm just wondering when the new "Republican contributor" for Larry Agran, Beth Krom, and Suhkee Kang is getting announced?
You're out of line. I invited Cynthia on to blog about Anaheim, and she is welcome to blog about anything else, as well. Including the 4th Supe District. I've supported a few Democrats for local office in my time, and I don't concede to anyone in terms of being a conservative. You can't throw people up against the wall every time they don't march in lock step.
I'm just wondering where the line is Matt that can't be crossed here. I'm not oblivious that there are business considerations for certain Republicans to support Tom Daly, but this is just really blatant. So for example, would it be kosher if all the sudden I took a liking to Jerry Brown and started posting about all the wonders of what a Brown administration will do to help CA?
"I'm not oblivious that there are business considerations for certain Republicans to support Tom Daly, but this is just really blatant."
"Blatant?" Cynthia doesn't have any "business consideration." I know the FFFers thinks this is some kind of plot, but they're crazy and think everything is a conspiracy.
"So for example, would it be kosher if all the sudden I took a liking to Jerry Brown and started posting about all the wonders of what a Brown administration will do to help CA?"
Now you're being ridiculous. It's a huge stretch to take Cynthia's support for Daly in a non-partisan race and compare it to being a pro-Jerry Brown version of Sgt. York: promoting a liberal partisan Democrat in the race for the state's top job.
You're really gonna say with a straight face Matt that Supervisor races are non partisan? Wow.
They are technically, legally non-partisan.
But I fully subscribe to the maxim that there is no such thing as a non-partisan race, in that party affiliation obviously matters to varying degrees, depending upon the office.
Yeah, right! When a DEM is in office, he/she suggest Committee of 25 as to HOW to fix and replace a street light bulb! When a GOP is in office, he/she suggest go to Home Depot and fix the street light bulb immediately! Do not kid yourself on a local office as being non-partisan!
Ooh, ooh! May I take that one Matt? Allan, your argument exemplifies what is wrong with the Republican Party today, and it is why we have alienated voters. This party line mentality is destroying what was once a fabulous vehicle for efficient government. I support candidates based upon their character and track record. The fact that most of those candidates tend to have an R behind their names is the result of our shared values, I do not vote for them simply because the R is there! Today we see Republicans supporting people who just plain should not be in government, solely because they are Republicans. What is that? It is like a family protecting the “scary Uncle”, because he is family. Sorry, but “scary Uncle” needs rehab folks! I support Tom Daly because long before Mayor Curt came along with his “Freedom Friendly” government (which also sometimes makes for slumlord friendly government, but that is another post), Tom Daly was in there making Government just plain friendly. He made an otherwise intimidating system accessible for everyday folk like me who simply wanted to know my government gave a damn, even though I was not a well-heeled developer. Look at the old videos of Council meetings under Tom Daly. He was fabulous at getting people to talk about their concerns, and finding solutions. He would engage citizens every chance he got. Look at today’s Council videos; we have elected officials rolling their eyes, chewing their cuticles in boredom, Blackberrying under the desk, and getting up and walking out in the middle of being addressed. Tom Daly made residents feel like we had a voice at City Hall. When he moved to the County Clerk-Recorder’s office, I had the chance to see that same attitude in action. I use the C-R office for my work in research. Prior to Daly the staff was rude, their favorite catch phrase was, “It’s not my job”. Questions were diverted to the “Help Desk”, which was not manned once in my experience prior to Daly. Want to know why there is such pushback over on the other blog? Folks now have to do their jobs! They now understand that they are there for the public, not the other way around, and some are not happy about it. Again, isn't that in line with what Republican principles are about? Tom Daly moved in, and re-opened the bankruptcy mothballed Archives so we can do research prior to 1950. Because of Daly’s staff, we now see Historic Property Preservation Contracts going through the roof, and those Contracts represent private investment in private property. Neighborhood revitalization without government funding, how much more Republican does it get? Those Contracts would be nearly impossible on many levels without the access to the C-R office and Archives that Tom Daly created. If Tom Daly now wants to take that same skill set to the Supe’s seat, and make County government as accessible to the everyday citizen as he made Anaheim and the Clerk-Recorder’s office, he has my support. Tom Daly may have a D behind his name on a ballot, but as far as I am concerned, he has a big “S” on his chest! In the meantime, the attitude that we need to oppose a good man because he has the “wrong” political affiliation, while supporting utter morons because they are aligned with the “right” party, is archaic and divisive. The Republican Party needs to realize that the juvenile schoolyard clique thing is not working.
This is great! I tend to enjoy clashing with you, minus the occasional threat of law suit. And I congratulate you for giving PurpleCounty a big push to the left. Best Of Luck !!!
Sorry to tell you Daniel, I am not a shift to the left by any means. And as long as you stick to the issues, we can clash all you want. Keep it factual, personal attacks are for those who have run out of intelligent arguments.
What great dialog...Colony, Allan, Matt this is quality stuff. As many out there know, I'm a friend and supporter of TD..I shudder to think how long we have been friends; at least to the early 80's. So as I said, this is good stuff. It is the type of give and take our Blog needs and from which it will grow. Yes, the Republican Party does have a Big Tent, or at least it better. The next few months will be interesting times in OC and I look forward to reading Colony Rabble's contribution to the events ahead.
I had the opportunity to talk to Pete a couple months ago when he started to seriously look at a run for Council. I haven't known Pete that long, mostly through the East Anaheim Neighborhood District Council over the past couple of years, but one thing has come across in my dealings with him and that's he honestly wants what's best for the City of Anaheim. He doesn't seem to have any other motive than that. I think that Pete, like many of us in Anaheim, are a bit worried about a lack of experience and continuity on Council in the coming years. The Mayor will be termed out shortly. Both Councilwoman Galloway and Councilman Sidhu will be termed out in two years and might possibly vacate their seats sooner if they win in the other elections they are competing for. The City has recently seen the departure of its City Attorney, City Manager and Deputy City Manager. This has opened the possibility of a very inexperienced and untested leadership team in Anaheim. It's hard to know if Pete will be effective at improving our city if he gets elected, but I'm fairly certain he's in it for the right reasons.
Thanks for that input. Are you going to his kickoff tonight? I would be interested in who attends, and get a feel for who is backing him, and some of the conversation at that event. Yeah, I know, tough choice. Political shmooze-fest or Anaheim Historical Society Victorian Christmas party. Hope to see you at the one if you do not attend the other.
Unfortunately, I have something else already book on my calendar. That's the terrible thing about this time of year, too many events to possibly attend all of them. However, I am going to try to swing by Pete's kickoff before my other engagement. I'm sorry to be missing the AHS's party tonight, it sounds like the house is decorated beautifully.
If you make it to Pete's would you mind popping in here and recapping for us? I think everyone is in the dark about this Republican contender for office, it would be great to collect information beyond the slick mailing pieces we are likely to get. Thanks! Have a great night wherever you are. CW
Great article, but I don't think that "It looks like Tom Tait is not the only Anaheim candidate to get a jump-start on the 2010 campaign". http://www.rockyslots.com/ - Thanks anyway - Melanie
