On Thursday, August 20, 2009, I filed a report here on RedCounty entitled "Alert:  State Senate approves Sentencing Commission"

Today, the Assembly by a vote of 41 - 35 approved SB 18XXX by State Senator Denise Moreno-Ducheny (D-San Diego, District 40), which was watered down from the original bill AB 14XXX.

The new bill has removed the sentencing commission, but stays intact majority of the provisions and places serious limitations on the ability to revoke parole on certain offenders who faily to comply with the terms of their parole.

State Senator Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento, District 6) says, ""The Assembly took a good first step today but it’s not a complete package."

As we have seen in recent weeks,” said Assemblyman Curt Hagman (R-Chino Hills, District 60), “Offenders who appear on paper to be low risk can often turn out to be extremely dangerous criminals.  We must retain the ability to revoke parole to preserve the safety of our communities.  The state needs to overhaul its prisons; just cycling criminals through the system isn't enough.  We need to take a hard look at how we close the corrections gap, because taking the easy road to balance the budget cannot be important than public's safety."

All Assembly Republicans voted against the bill along with 6 Democrats:  Assemblywoman Anna Caballero (D-Salinas, District 28), Assemblywoman Alyson Huber (D-El Dorado Hills, District 10), Assemblyman Ted Lieu (D-Torrance, District 53), Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco, District 12), Assemblyman Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara, District 35) and Assemblyman Manny Perez (D-Coachella Valley, District 80)

Note:  Assemblywoman Anna Caballero is running for State Senate from the 12th District (Hollister, Turlock and Merced)  and Assemblymembers Ted Lieu and Pedro Nava are running for California Attorney General in 2010.
